Field Notes

Description:

This looks like one of the armyworms to me (Spodoptera sp.). Any suggestions? :-)

Habitat:

On goldenrod in the tallgrass prairie

Notes:

When I first observed this caterpillar, I noticed the body fluid oozing from it. I quickly scanned the scene and saw a fuzzy little fellow hiding down below (see 1st image). ;-) Even though it was wounded, this caterpillar continued to feed on the flowers.

Aaron, I agree with you. It looks very much like Spodoptera ornithogalli: http://bugguide.net/node/view/473723/bgimage
