Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized woodpecker, black "moustache" on males only, black crescent just under neck and red nape. Spotted on belly. Undersides of wings and tail conspicuously yellow. Dark tail and white rump.

Notes:

Often seen foraging on the ground where it finds ants - its favorite food. Flickers in the west have red undersides of wings and tail, also, the red on the nape is absent in both sexes and males in the west have a red "moustache".
