Welcome to Project Noah, Terrence! This is a great first spotting. It appears to be a Meadow Katydid of some sort, Subfamily Conocephalinae. Yours looks like a female since it has an ovipositor (the blade-shaped appendage extending from the end of the abdomen). One easy way to tell Katydids (and Crickets) from Grasshoppers is that Katydids have very long, thread-like antennae, Grasshoppers have shorter, thicker antennae. Additionally, female Katydids have that sword-like ovipositor. Female Grasshoppers do not have an ovipositor and female Crickets have a needle-shaped ovipositor. Here is a link that may help you find an ID: http://bugguide.net/node/view/4297/bgpage All insects, spiders, crabs and similar creatures belong in the Arthropods section. The Others section is for organisms like jellyfish, starfish, snails, slugs, etc. I have moved this to Arthropods for you. If you haven't already done so, it would be a good idea to take a read through the FAQ page for general information on posting here. http://www.projectnoah.org/faq I hope this helps!
