As you can see, I have gone for the blue-winged because mine seems to be just pale and dark grey whereas the Germanica appears to be buffish or brownish at least on the darker bands, the wiki says buff/greyish while the blue-winged is variable. If it were buffish it would be more difficult to decide, I think.
That's why I wrote my comment below... There are 2 very similar Oedipoda sp., one with red and one with blue wings. You only can see the colors when they are flying. I have seen tons of them in Spain.

I haven't the time yet to check mines.
Hi Jemma, look here

There's also the Oedipoda Germanic but is larger and with red wings http://www.insecte.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=44563
Some grasshoppers most definitely can fly, especially our Egyptian Grasshoppers which look like small birds! Locusts are just Grasshoppers which have swarmed.
amazing fact valentinezza!! W ehave similar ones on Mt Diablo with blue legs. Would it look like a butterfly? i have seen grasshoppers jump from place to place but never fly. infact I never knew they flew!!

It appeared to jump ahead of me on the path, I did not see it open any wings so saw no colour. I stopped to look and take the photos, when I walked round it, it turned, as they often do. I then left it. If I see one again I'll look closer.
It seems like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oedipoda_caerulescens. Have you seen it jump? It looks like a blue butterfly. There're many in my part, http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/36981020.
