Caterpillar of the sphinx moth. Amazingly large droppings, called frass (ha! a new WWF word for me).

Hi there. The larvae of the five-spotted hawk moth (Manduca quinquemaculatus) have eight v-shaped stripes rather than the seven diagonal stripes of the Carolina sphinx moth larvae (Manduca sexta). See this link for Manduca quinquemaculatus: http://bugguide.net/node/view/5011
