Description:

An armed, climbing undershrub with woody terete stems and recurved or rarely straight spines, young stems very delicate, brittle and smooth; leaves reduced to minute chaffy scales and spines.Uses: The roots are bitter, sweet, emollient, cooling, nervine tonic, constipating, galactagogue, ophthalimic, anodyne, aphrodisiac, diuretic, rejuvenating, carminative, appetizer, stomachic, antispasmodic and tonic. They are useful in nervous disorders, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, dysentery, tumours, inflammations, vitiated conditions of vata and pitta, burning sensations, hyperdipsia, ophthalmopathy, nephropathy, hepatopathy, strangury, scalding of urine, throat infections, tuberculosis, cough, bronchitis, gleet, gonorrhoea, leucorrhoea, leprosy, epilepsy, fatigue, hyperacidity, colic, haemorrhoids, cardiac debility, hypertension, abortion, agalactia and general debility.

Notes:

Known as Hathawariya in Sri Lanka.
