Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Coral Honeysuckle and Woodbine, this plant is a high-climbing vine that wraps itself around small trees and shrubs. It can reach anywhere from 3-20 feet tall. This Honeysuckle has clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers that are red on the outside and yellow on the inside. The leaves behind the flowers (or later in the season, the fruit) are fused at the base. Hummingbirds love to drink the nectar from Trumpet Honeysuckle.

Habitat:

Trumpet Honeysuckle prefers sunlight with partial shade and moist soil. It does best in rich soils and can tolerate a variety. (Sandy Loam, Clay Loam, Clay etc.)

Notes:

I found this Honeysuckle growing up a young Poplar (Trembling Aspen) Tree. It had already wound its way up quite high. I realize there are other, similar varieties of Honeysuckle, and I'm not 100% positive this is the Trumpet variety, but having missed seeing it flower, this is my best guess. This plant was growing wild in the forest near the house.
