Field Notes

Description:

Ectophasia crassipennis is a species of parasitic flies belonging to the family Tachinidae, subfamily Phasiinae. It has large reddish compound eyes and large wings have with brownish or greyish dots. The abdomen is red-yellow, with a black longitudinal strip which occupies more than one-fifth of the width of the abdomen. It is broad and flattened in the male. Unfortunately this beautiful fly seems to lack an English common name.

Habitat:

Garden, rural.

Notes:

Tachinidae is a large and variable family of true flies within the order Diptera, with more than 8,200 known species counted to this day. It would seem they are all protelean parasitoids, or occasionally parasites, of arthropods.
Note on ID: can be difficult to differentiate from Phasia hemiptera:
-Ectophasia crassipennis : wing cell in "R5" is opened at the edge.
-Phasia hemiptera : wing cell in "R5" is closed at the edge.
