Description:
The Kowhai (pronounced 'Core-fie' as in 'fire') tree is a native to New Zealand, which flowers in early spring, with the leaves growing later. Kowhai flowers are bell-shaped with silky yellow petals, while the trees themselves generally are rather small and woody with flexible, angular branches.
The name 'Kowhai' comes from the Maori word for yellow.
I saw this beautiful Kowhai tree on a walk and couldn't resist taking a photo.
Habitat:
A suburban front garden in sunshine.
Notes:
The nectar of the Kowhai is a favourite of the Tui, along with many other native and introduced birds.
I took these photographs on my phone which is why the exposure is bit odd.
