Mangrove Buckeye

OK, lowland is now confirmed, then I am happy, as well with the color of the antennae underside. I think we are on the safe side with my suggestion of Junonia cf. evarete, just to indicate the similarity with Genoveva.

Oh sorry for that, I read in Wikipedia that 'Junonia coenia' was found in Central America and till Colombia. Generally I don't rely on wikipedia but I checked other sources and they gave me the species similar to this one plus in PN it has been spotted in Colombia and Brazil if the spottings are corectly ID-ed. Sorry, not trying to make it even worse just trying to learn :).

Tricky one! Coenia is not found in Costa Rica. It is either Junonia evarete or Junonia genoveva. Separation is controversly discussed and many of them are mis-ided. Andrew Nield, one of the experts consideres the color of the underside as the only reliable criteria. In your #3 I see whitish not black color of the underside of the antennae, so my guess would be Junonia evarete. Range is OK, however, the altitude might be conflicting with the lowlands indicated by BOA. That's why I suggest to make a cf. for the ID. If you do not feel comfortable with my suggestion you might take Junonia sp. as scientific and Buckeye Butterfly as common name.
