see...it's not a hornet:P...that's why you should take my advise cautiously;)
I am afraid I don't know which Helophilus it is...
This is a fly that is a bee mimic. Hopefully someone will be able to offer an ID for you. Nice spotting!!
My initial thought is that its a hornet...I'm not sure what species though. Nice spotting. I don't think hornets are real common in my area...Or maybe i've mistaken them for bumblebees from a distance.
