Field Notes

Description:

This orb spider of genus Neoscona is difficult to identify as it has varied morphs. It has classical abdominal markings and covered with fine short hairs. This spider also ambushes prey with lightning speed and overcomes them with a fatal bite. Found in the evening sitting with legs retracted.

Notes:

Found this big brownish spider in resting position and tried touching it with a leaf. It moved its front legs and retracted them. I first saw it on the jasmine creeper all through the evening and wasn't found the next day. I noticed similar nests on other trees like the Indian mast tree and silk cotton trees in the same compound, but yet to confirm the ID. <br.
Looked at Neoscona bengalensis but the colors vary. My img looks similar to http://www.landofthewild.com/showPic.php?&albumId=273&albumTitle=Spider….
