Field Notes

Description:

A butterfly a bit mysterious to me, especially if we consider its habitat. Unfortunately, that's all I can say about it so far.

Habitat:

Brazil's interior, MG state. I found this specimen in an almost totally dark environment, inside an old granary. She showed well adapted to low light and seemed to enjoy the darkness. I needed to use the flash and a headlamp to photograph it.

Notes:

This resulting blue color is a reflection of the camera's flash. In naked eye the predominant color is yellowish brown.

Thank you very much, bayucca! I forgot to say that this resulting blue color is a reflection of the camera's flash. In naked eye the predominant color is brown, just like the species you suggested. Nice! Is it me or this species is uncommon and there is not much information about it? Thank you, my friend.
Nymphalidae, Satyrinae, Taygetis sp. and most probably Taygetis yphtima. To my knowledge the only Taygetis with this typical little hook at the edge of the forewing. And also a very variable species! http://www.faunaparaguay.com/SAN%20RAF%20BUTTERFLIES%2034d%20Taygetis%20ypthima%20april%2008%20moriz.jpg http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/L/taygetis_ypthima_types.htm http://www.ecoregistros.com.ar/site/imagen.php?id=24351 http://www.flickr.com/photos/37256239@N03/5451700042 http://neotropicalbutterflies.com/Site%20Revision/Pages/Nymphalidae_Pages/Satyrinae/Tribe_Satyrini_Subtribe_Euptychiina/Euptychiina_Pages/Taygetis_ypthima.html
