Description:

Medium sized ants with red body and head and black abdomen. They bite... it hurts... quite a bit. The have built a rather serious trail throughout the area, sometimes going below ground and surfacing a few feet away. Lots of pines and cedar in the area, and a lot of sand too.

Habitat:

Sandy woods beside a lake.

The guys at Bugguide are thinking Formica ravida, but I'm concerned about the range of these ants. Is this possibly Formica Integra?... please help!
pogonomyrmex bicolor? That's what they look like to me, but way out of range. These ants seem to posing a problem for many gardeners in Ontario, and as far as I know, there hasn't been a definitive ID.
Please help identify! I'm no good with ants!
