Field Notes
Description:
This little guy is a juvenile eastern rat snake. He found his way into our basement and my was he a feisty one! From what I've read, their primary defense is to flee. They will also give off a foul musky smell. Additionally, as I was able to witness, their head shape will expand when they feel threatened. I was really amazing.
The juvenile eastern rat snakes have this black and grayish pattern to them with that distinct horizontal band across their nose.
