Description:

This is the shed exoskeleton of a Froghopper. The second image shows its relation to the spittle from the immature froghopper on the right and the underside of the mature froghopper on the top.
Arthropods shed their hard external shell as they grow. That process is called ecdysis. The outside layer of the eyes also sheds. Another reason for shedding is metamorphosis.
