Field Notes

Description:

A beautiful leaf beetle about 8mm long with reddish-brown pitted elytra with minute pale spots. The elytra margins were an olive green colour. Head and thorax also show pale markings.
This leaf beetle had its antennae and cream-toed feet out at first (Pic 4) but shortly later, retracted them. A close look revealed two yellowish capsule-shaped eggs on the leaf (pic1)

Habitat:

Eucalyptus tree

Notes:

Family: Chrysomelidae

Thanks for the information Jemma. They are really very cute - I am hoping to see your spotting soon.
Martini said that these are Tortoise Beetles because they retract their feet, I was simply thrilled because it was my first spotting of a tortoise beetle. Totally unexpected.
