Planted throughout the St. Louis zoo. We'd like to know what it is to see if it would be suitable for our property.

Would it grow on your property, yes. Although, you need to select the correct cultivar. Many are weedy and only select few will form nice clumps, you can expect it not stay where you want it. When I have done landscaping, more people want it gone, than want it planted. It is usually used for customers that will not water and require very little maintenance. The only thing I hate more than this stuff is privet.
