Field Notes

Description:

What we have here is a warthog that just found his favourite mudhole! It is just one little problem, there is some one staring at him from a stupid car! But that mud-puddle was just too irresistible, so he took a quick dip and ran off...

Habitat:

Mix of forrest and meadowland. They are wide spread in Kruger national park and inhabitants of different types of biomes, as long as there are things to eat... (grass, roots, berries and other fruits, bark, fungi, insects, eggs and carrion) wikipedia

Notes:

The common name comes from the four large, wart-like protrusions found on the head of the warthog, which serve as a fat reserve and are used for defense when males fight.

Congratulations Tiz a great photo
Wonderful series - congratulations!
When horses run with their tails straight up they are running from Horse flies. Would the Warthogs do the same? Or it's a pig thing.....?
A wonderful Pumba! Great pictures with so much personality. Congratulations on SOTD!
Congrats Tiz, your great series of a warthog enjoying a mud bath has been chosen spotting of the day! The warthog is a wild member of the pig family native to sub-Saharan Africa. Yes Kel. He was so disapointed when I came along and disturbed him! It was so obvious that he really wanted that bath :) If he could swear at me he would! I also enjoy that Karen, every time I see them running I cant help smiling. I do not understand the function of that though, but I am sure it is good for something :)
Wonderful series! One of my favorite memories of South Africa was catching glimpses of the baby warthogs as they ran by with their tails in the air - way too quickly to photograph!
I thought he'd slipped in time to escape. So I think that for a warthog, the mud is like the hot tub to humans.
:) Ye, they are quite alert. But it is also quite common that they "live" at the camp sites inside the parks. I guess the grass is short, green ans tasty there :) Had to chase a whole hog family out from a campsite roof-shelter once before I could "move in". That was in Uganda. My friend did not sleep very well that night, she dreamt about warhogs eating on her feet... A bit to exiting for a city-chick I guess :D
I'm just glad to hear you were in a car when you took the photos ... he looks like he could move pretty quickly!
There he was wallowing in the mud minding his own business ..... LOL!! : ) Great set of images Tiz
I tried to charm him with a little song, but it did not work :(
