Field Notes

Description:

An attractive little moth about 8mm long. Wings were a mottled brown with broad white bands. The outer margins of wings were fringed. A small tuft of dark setae seen on back of head and the middle leg showed a burst of white spikey setae.
Could not see any details of head or mouthparts. The antennae might be held under wings.

Habitat:

Spotted near a sports field with native trees.

Notes:

Spotted in the morning after a warm winter night.
Have seen many of these small moths, appearing towards the end of winter. This, I hope, is the last of "small brown moths" !!!

have an ID at last ! Thanks to Stephen Thorpe for the ID. This is a bag moth from Family: Psychidae
The larvae of these moths remain and feed in silk cases encrusted with twigs or leaves. The adult female is wingless and remains in the case breeding and laying eggs within the case. Males are winged and mate with females through holes in the free end of the cases. So, this is perhaps a male moth !
