Hey, Jemma, you should know me... I was just kidding... ;-)
Sometimes I shoot completely into the dark, like here I must admit. I just estimated the approximative size and took first the Downy and then Nuthalls. I was just proud to got the point and for that there should be a PN patch for woodpecker and their feathers :-)!
Bayucca, I do not understand what you mean by "woody feathers?"
But it has a barred back and a male has a red crown. The Downy's has a white patch on it's back. This wood pecker is commonly confused with Ladder back. I have seen so many lately ,that I can spot a nutall's easily/ i am wondering though if I had seen this picture, I am not sure I could have guessed.I need to see the entire wood pecker!
thank you for you enthusiasm, Namitha, Bayucca and Anna.
The other most Wood pecker which we have is the "Acorn Wood Pecker" Not unusual considering the acorns an oak tree yields!
.
Hi Jemma, I didn't know, that much about Red-bellied Woodpeckers. I just googled woodpeckers and came across that, along with Downy woodpecker and I found that it is the smallest in America, and so went with the red bellied [voilà! now I know about 2 woodpeckers in the world]. I will wait till the end to see who nails it. Thanks again.
thanks for your interest , Namitha.I wish it was a Red Bellied. Red Bellied wood pecker is one reason people become Birders! Mostly found in Georgia. Here on the West coast we have mostly Oak Wood Lands (Hint Hint)
Nice one Jemma. Is it a Red-bellied Woodpecker?. I am, not at all good at woodpeckers, but I liked the idea of the quiz, and thought I would take the challenge. I am sure there are better competitors here.
Thank you.
