Field Notes

Description:

Large blue crab at mouth of a burrow in the forest of Utila. This individual has lost its large white foreclaw.

Habitat:

Broadleaf forest at sea level, adjacent to the beach.

Notes:

This species was amazingly abundant in the forest, with dozens or hundreds per hectare, and as I walked down the trail, I could constantly hear the rustling of these crabs scurrying among the leaf litter.
