Field Notes

Description:

This is a pleurobranch with a very broad foot and relatively flattened body, which makes it ideal for crawling over soft sand and for burrowing. It has a wide oral veil (that's shaped like a moon, hence its name) with sensory papillae underneath, which it uses for locating food. This species burrows under sand but keeps its rhinophores and pallial siphon unsubmerged.

Habitat:

Sandy areas.

Notes:

Spotted this (and another smaller individual) at around 12m depth during a night dive. It measured about 10cm long (the smaller one about 8cm). Both slugs were very active on the sand.
