Field Notes

Description:

A newly hatched pale Portuguese Millipede about 6 mm long.

Habitat:

Suburban garden

Class: Diplopoda

family: Julidae

Notes:

These millipedes are everywhere in gardens in Australia. They were accidentally introduced in 1950s and are now in plague proportions, having no natural predator.
It is interesting to note that they were implicated in one train crash and one train cancellation in Australia ! - the former, because they were crushed in such great number on the tracks that deceleration was not possible and the latter, because of intereference with train signals !!
