Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Nodding Beggarticks, this is an annual plant that is native to North America. The flowers bloom from August to October and are 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) across with 8 oval shaped petals. These petals are often varying lengths and in some flowers a number of petals are absent. As the plant ages, the flower heads point increasingly downward, which is how this plant gets its common name.

Habitat:

Nodding Bur-Marigold grows in partial shade along swamps, ponds, marshes and shorelines. It is usually quite scattered but may occasionally form large colonies.

Notes:

I found these flowers growing along the bank of our local marsh and right beside the road. There were quite a number of them there, looking very bright and cheerful. They remind me of little sunflowers.
