Description:

Beautiful bracts not yet unfurled. "Petals" are pointy.

Habitat:

Tropical rainforest in Pana'ewa Gardens, but this may not have been planted.

Notes:

Endemic to Brazil.

Thank you for narrowing the ID down a bit, Craig! I agree, there may be little flowers inside the cup; it's hard for me to remember since I don't have a better shot. The cup is presumably formed from the red bracts.
Definitely a Bromeliad of some kind. It's an inflorescence, so there are numerous small flowers held inside the cup at the top, which may or may not have opened (difficult to see). I'm not very good at Brom genera, but its certainly cultivated or escaped from cultivation as there are no native Bromeliaceae in Hawaii.
Well, as far as I know, any of you could be right! stho002, that's really an intriguing thought, because Eurya sandicensis is so endangered... I wasn't able to find any images of the flower either.
For some strange reason, it reminds me of a Camellia ... and I can't seem to find images of the flower of the Hawaiian realtive Eurya sandwicensis...
