Description:
Cap: 12 cm across. Surface white with light tan shades in parts, covered in short fibres. Margin is entire but ragged. Cap flesh is white and not staining when cut. Gills were white when young turing fleshy pink. Gills are crowded, free from stipe, and smooth edged. Spore print (third photo) is orange brown. The best match in the Crayola set of 96 crayons is "mahogany"
Stipe: 18 cm long, 1.2 cm wide at top, 2.5cm wide at base. Distinct universal veil starts between 2.5 and 4.5 cm up and extends for 4cm. Stipe surface is white and viscid in parts (slightly darker where wet). Stipe is solid through. Universal veil is a light brown, very wrinkly and quite dirty. Its surface is wet and slippery.
There is no partial veil.

Growing on a log and stump of a recently cut tree
Notes:
In "Demystifying mushrooms" if I follow what seems to be the true colour (no pink at all) this mushrooms fails completely to key out. Otherwise it distinctly keys out to Volvariella bombycina. It is similar in other books although it sometimes could key out to V. volvacea.
However the spore print (third photo) is just too dark for V. bombycina.
My books do concentrate on North America so perhaps this is some Euopean Volvariella?
The last picture is a button just before the cap has erupted.
