Field Notes

Description:

Possible Mountain Lion Scat. One had been spotted recently in the area.

Notes:

Cougar Scat

Mountain lion scat tends to be segmented with a diameter of an inch or larger. It often contains hair and bits of bone which may give it a white coloration. Mountain lions deposit their scat in prominent locations such as the middle of trails and dirt roads, along ridgelines, and near kill caches as territorial markings. This behavior is more commonly seen with males than females.

Hey Jim, I am no expert either. I just wanted to point out that canine can not be ruled out from presence of fruit or berries, even my dog will snatch raspberries off my plants and he loves them.
Hi Chesterbperry. I looked up coyote scat and it could very well be coyote. I was influenced by the sign and I am not expert on scat. Maybe I should have torn it apart a little. My companions had said, "Don't step on that." They were quite amused when I started taking photos...
Canine can not be ruled out by presence of berries, coyotes will eat berries.
Thanks, KarenL. I joined. A mountain lion had been spotted recently in the area. The scat had hair and berries in it, so definitely not canine...
