Coyote
Canis latrans

Field Notes
Description:
Large tracks. While wolves are prominent in the UP, no doubt especially on the Refuge, it is hard to tell whether they are wolf or coyote. Coyote are typically small, but could appear larger in snow or mud. Any opinions? I'm going with coyote for now, because it's in snow and is still about 2 1/2 inches long. Or does it look to be more 3-4 inches? Sometimes my depth perception is horrible. I wear about a size 7 1/2 shoe.
Habitat:
Fields, edged and spotted with pines, located in vicinity wetland type areas on Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
