Field Notes

Description:

Small squishyish egg shaped thing. Not sure if its from a tree or bush.

1.25 inches or so in diameter.

Habitat:

Mixed deciduous and coniferous forest.

I agree with chesterbperry - looks like a gall. Could you tell if the waxy looking thing in the center was a seed or a rolled up insect? here's my sighting of an "oak apple" (a gall) still attached to the tree http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/25605193 and here's one found loose on the ground: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/24653277 (it's in a 6-yr old's hand, so not as large as it seems!)
This could be a gall, I think I might even see a larva in center of left hand piece.
