Field Notes

Description:

This nest is at a huge colony near Chilliwack, BC. The trails near to the nests are closed for the breeding season so these photos are taken from a long distance. The noise of the herons was incredible.

Habitat:

The colony is situated by the Sumas River near Chilliwack, BC. There are marshes, ponds, streams and the river close by. I have read that Great Blue Herons will hunt up to 30 miles from the colony to get the food needed.

Notes:

There is a Bald Eagle nest very close to this colony. The Bald Eagles were watching pretty close as the adult herons left the nest for foraging. There are also 2 Osprey nests very close to the colony. There must be a lot of fish available for food!
