Field Notes

Description:

Superb Starling
Lamprotornis superbus
19cm, 7.5"
Ad is easily separated from similar species by its creamy-white eyes, narrow white breast band, white underwing-coverts and vent. Imm is duller with dark eyes and no white breast band: white vent is distinctive from similar imms. HH small flocks are confiding, common and widespread in semi-arid country, open woodland and bushed grasslands, including towns and gardens, from sea-level to 3000m. Vo song is a long ramble of rising and falling skirls and squeals. In flight, calls a purred skrrrrrri.
