Field Notes

Description:

I found this small dead snake in the middle of the Coastal Trail at Pt. Reyes NS. It was a grassy area. The belly was a light green with no spots. I'm very familiar with Gopher snakes and the markings on top were different. My guess is that it may be a baby of some species of racer. What do you think? The total length is apx. 6 inches.

Habitat:

Found on a dry dusty trail through a grassy area in view of the Pacific at Pt. Reyes NS.

Notes:

I couldn't see any sign of injury, but assume it died as the result of a hiker accidentally stepping on it.

Species ID Suggestions
