Description:

5 or 6cm long this Cricket? was found on a Senecio on the sheltered side of Mt buller.

You may be on the money Lori, this link (http://museumvictoria.com.au/about/mv-blog/apr-2011/mountain-katydids/) has a short video mentioning their food plant as Senecio, which it is on in this spotting.
It is certainly an interesting insect!
It's a stunning critter. Wish I could be more help. My first thought was pygomorph, but the antenna are wrong.

My best guess is that it a nymph of the Mountain katydid (Acripeza reticulata).
