Field Notes

Description:

Has the markings of a downy woodpecker but is at least 12 inches tall. Can not see it in the picture but there is a red mark on the back of the head. I'm thinking it was a hairy woodpecker.

Habitat:

Eastham MA

Species ID Suggestions

Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

Downy Woodpecker

Picoides pubescens

Comments (1)

Large size and absence of markings on the outer retrix suggest Hairy over Downy.
