Field Notes

Description:

very worn, subtle shades of brown and beige, large head and body, striped antennae, acting like a moth but looking like a butterfly.

Habitat:

manicured gardens at Niagara Falls, Ontario park.

Notes:

I just added another photo showing the striped antennae and I see that there are not clubs on the end of the antennae, so think that this means it is a moth species, even though a daytime one?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erynnis_juvenalis Yes it does look like Juvenal's Duskywing. I have linked the wiki page for that species in case anyone wants to look at it. It is present in that area so a good possibility. I cannot see the 2 diagnostic white spots on my spotting though, so not certain.

Thanks, Liam. I do not know which is in that area either as I was only there for a few days but I will look into it.

Spread-winged Skipper of some sort (which is a butterfly), maybe Juvenal's Duskywing? I'm not sure which species you have up there, so you may want to wait for a second opinion.
