Field Notes

Description:

Pink urn-shaped flowers. Waxy grayish-green leaves. Woody shrub with shredding reddish-brown bark. Ground cover, up to three feet tall (as this specimen).

Habitat:

Dry sunny slopes and rocky outcrops. Cascades west to coast in Washington and Oregon.

Notes:

This shrub is a fairly uncommon natural hybrid between Hairy Manzanita (Arctostaphylos columbiana) and Kinnickinick (Arctostphylos uva-ursi). Cultivars are occasionally available in the nursery trade.
