Field Notes

Description:

These millipedes are about 4 cm. long. Most are black, but some are brown in color, with yellow spots at each side of every segment.

Notes:

At first I thought these are cyanide millipedes (Harpaphe haydeniana). But upon closer inspection (as suggested by another Project Noah member) they seem to be actually A. coarctata which are commonly mistaken for H. haydeniana which live in the US.

The odor is a defensive measure, and handling them will usually leave the scent on your hands.

Haha. What is the proper way of smelling a millipede? I sure hope it does not involve crushing them. I'll give smelling one of these a try one of these days. After all, these millipedes live just outside my office. :)

Thank you Leana Lahom-Cristobal! I've edited this entry. I really thought H. haydeniana has reached our shores. I wonder if A. coarctata also smells like almonds (like H. haydeniana).
