Field Notes

Description:

From a old tree here in upstate New York. The photo on the left shows the leaves, which are rather large (I used a penny for scale). The photo on the right shows dark cherry-red seeds (?) of some sort beside hard, spiky husks or pods. I'm not sure of the terminology. The spiky pods may be half of one whole one, and they are rounder than the photo shows.

Habitat:

Village street in Rhinebeck, NY, near the Hudson River. Upstate NY.

Notes:

It looks as though the red seeds (?) burst out of the hard, spiky pods when they hit the ground. I've never seen this tree before.

Species ID Suggestions

Horse chestnut

Aesculus hippocastanum
