Habitat:

spotted on a milkweed leaf in a garden at Oregon Ridge Nature Center:

Notes:

As an adult, it is known as the Virginia tiger moth.

Thanks, Jellis! That was my (inexperienced) guess when I was looking through my nephew's guide to backyard critters. :-) Unless suggested otherwise, we'll go with that ID.
