Dunno, I wondered that, too. The biggest concentration of Osage orange I've ever seen is up in Artesia, Lowndes County ... they're everywhere, I assume planted on purpose when it was a farming community. Interesting tree for a lot of reasons!
My favorite common name is "bowling ball tree" ... :-)
It is an Osage Orange. Not really edible
