Field Notes

Description:

Most of the body is covered by a thick, gray shell, and what is not protected by the shell is covered with thick hairs.

Habitat:

Found in the evening on the lawn in a post oak savannah habitat.

I'm sure they could, but I hear it's the claws that can rip you apart! I've given up on trying to catch them, just enjoy watching them. They can't hear or see well so you can get pretty close, but it seems like they always know you're there anyways because when you step too close they are gone so quickly! Hopefully you get to see some more soon!

Thanks Dilan and Bill! These guys are very common where I'm doing my research at, see at least a handful daily. Pretty funny guys, but so fast when you try to catch them!

I've always wanted to see one in the wild, and had my chance in Florida, but spooked him as I was approaching:( All I got to see was the back end. Awesome pics.
