Field Notes

Description:

The Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) is a small hummingbird, about 8 cm long (3 inches) with a long, straight and very slender bill. The female is slightly larger than the male.

Notes:

This was what I believe to be one of 2 juveniles that hatched in a tree in my back yard. They flitted around constantly challenging each other for weeks. This one was chasing bugs at the time I got the photos, even dive bombed me a few times. Great fun watching them!
