Field Notes

Description:

Jet Black head to tip of tail with a plain grey belly. One of the fastest snakes out there truly deserving the name "racer."

This photo was featured on the National Geographic Great Nature Project website!

Habitat:

Crossing my yard heading into a mixed forest.

Notes:

This one was in a very good mood for being picked up and "held" for a photo shoot. Was in no hurry to leave at all and never even attempted to bite. However, when it decided that the photo shoot was over, it only took seconds to cross my entire yard and get back into the woods.

Not venomous at all Bonnie. They are generally very curious snakes, and will come check you out if you allow them to. However, they are known to bite repeatedly if you try to capture them.

Very nice series. Thanks for sharing. @ BonnieLHuntsinger these snakes are not venomous. They are sometimes confused with the water moccasin which are venomous.
