Field Notes

Description:

Slender, black coloured bird with a body shape like that of a slim pigeon (Columba livia). Beak and legs are red.

Habitat:

This one was spotted at Thiksey Monstery, Ladakh; 11,800 ft altitude and located in the Indus valley. Spotted elsewhere in the Ladakh region at similar altitudes or more. Usually on the wing.

Notes:

Indistinguishable from the Yellow-billed Chough or Alpine Chough (Pyrrhocorax graculus) except for beak colour. Sometimes the two species were spotted side by side; soaring on wind currents.
