Field Notes

Description:

These insects are in the Corydalus genus, but beyond that there doesn't seem to be much help identifying the 35 species (at least 10 of which occur in Ecuador). These dobsonflies are about 5 cm long. The mandibles of the female (pictured) are not as impressive as the males, which can be 3 cm long.

Habitat:

These are very common here in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador and can be found many nights under lights on buildings. This one was on the metal door of a cement block wall of the generator shed.

Notes:

The main external difference in the sexes are the mandibles. They are quick to bite and need to be handled with care, both for that reason and they feel really fragile, being soft bodied.
