My nephew came across this fella in the woods in Caledon, Ontario, Canada. He said it shook its tail at him. Anyone know what snake this is?

Ah, that is sad sounding - all that effort to threaten you and it only works in certain circumstances. I didn't know this about snakes - thank you for the info RedTopRanger!
A lot of snakes will rattle their tail to mimic rattle snakes! It really only works if they're on something like dry leaves otherwise you can't really even tell they're doing ot.
