Field Notes

Description:

This is a very large bug, approximately 1.5 inches long. It has a shiny dark patch at the end of its wings and a semicircular crest — the eponymous wheel which resembles a portion of a circular saw.

Habitat:

A vegetated drainage ditch leading to a creek. A lot of insects in this habitat.

Notes:

This is an assassin bug and is among the largest of bugs in North America.
