Description:

At first glance I thought this was a small black and white beetle, but discovered it was some sort of cocoon, gall, or shell. It appeared to have two holes, one on each end. Casing was white with black spotting. About 2 cm across.

Habitat:

west central ga

Notes:

Found in an Oak tree.

Hi Momsavang, isn't this little cocoon neat! I have also found them in Mexico. They are the cocoons of an Ichneumonid wasp and are usually hanging by silk threads until the wasp emerges. I reared out one of the wasps, see this spotting, which also has links to other spottings on Noah. (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1209426013/fullscreen). If you have found one, you probably can find more, to rear out the wasp species!
