Wild Turkey
Meleagris gallopavo
44.2193, -123.206
Field Notes
Description:
The Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is native to North America and is the heaviest member of the diverse Galliformes. It is the same species as the domestic turkey, which was originally derived from a southern Mexican subspecies of Wild Turkey (not the related Ocellated Turkey).
Notes:
This lone hen was in a friends field with her little ones feeding. The babies seemed to be exercising wings and learning the fine points of keeping up with mom, flapping around and staying hidden! At one point she laid down on them all and put her head to the ground to hide. You can just see in last pic the baby peeking out from moms breast!
